The are a toward the mountain was called Niuhelewai after a now-diverted stream th at was fed by a collection of springs in the area. Water from the springs now flow directly to the ocean through Kapālama Canal. According to oral histories\, Hawaiian royalty once gathered at Niuhelewai for healing cerem onies. It was home to Haumea\, the Hawaiian goddess of fertility and child birth.Once part of a network of over 45 loʻi kalo\, Niuhelewai is the las t remaining as the other loʻi have been filled in to build present-day Ho nolulu Community College and urban Kalihi. Niuhelewai was once overcome wi th weeds\, but since 2015\, Robert Silva\, his family\, and his students f rom HCC have been helping to restore the wahi pana. Community workdays ar e hosted every first Saturday of the month. Tasks may include weeding\, p lanting\, harvesting\, and working in the ʻauwai. Be prepared to get wet and muddy\, and to work hard!
