The are a toward the mountain was called Niuhelewai after a now-diverted stream th at was fed by a collection of springs in the area. Water from the springs now flow directly to the ocean through Kapālama Canal. According to oral histories\, Hawaiian royalty once gathered at Niuhelewai for healing cerem onies. It was home to Haumea\, the Hawaiian goddess of fertility and child birth.Once part of a network of over 45 loʻi kalo\, Niuhelewai is the las t remaining as the other loʻi have been filled in to build present-day Ho nolulu Community College and urban Kalihi. Niuhelewai was once overcome wi th weeds\, but since 2015\, Robert Silva\, his family\, and his students f rom HCC have been helping to restore the wahi pana. Community workdays ar e hosted every first Saturday of the month. Tasks may include weeding\, p lanting\, harvesting\, and working in the ʻauwai. Be prepared to get wet and muddy\, and to work hard! First come\, Fi rst serve. ACTIVITY DESCRIPTIONUlupō ("Night of Inspiration") Heiau was one of the first sacred temples to have been built as a māpele (agricultu ral) heiau by the first people or menehune\, and dedicated to Kāneulupō.  KAULUAKALANA--the organization that cares for Ulupō--is a community-bas ed\, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that was founded in 2019 by kamaʻ āina of Kailua\, those who have been raised by the lands and leaders of t heir ahupuaʻa to chart and navigate a course leading to kanaka (people) a nd ʻāina (land) reunited in a relationship that feeds us physically\, in tellectually\, culturally\, and spiritually.
