He began as a poet among the Beats in 1960s Greenwich Village. He was men tored and influenced by Allen Ginsberg\, John Wieners\, Diane di Prima\, A lden Van Buskirk\, Michael McClure\, and Herbert Huncke.  He is the autho r of nine volumes of poetry and the creative writing tutorial “Let The C razy Child Write!” and has been a creative writing teacher for 40 years.   Recipient of the Berkeley Lifetime Achievement in Poetry Award in 2012\ ,  named the Best East Bay Writing Teacher in 2006\, received a PEN Oakla nd Josephine Miles National Award in 2003\, and was honored as a Lifetime Beat Laureate in 2023 by the National Beat Poetry Foundation. Karen Pierc e Gonzalez\, an award-winning writer/poet and artist\, will read her rece ntly published  Moon kissed\, Earth wrought\, Vision drunk (Bottlecap P ress 2025) Her six chapbooks also include Down River with Li Po (Black Cat Poetry Press 2025)\, RavenSong (Four Feathers Press 2024)\, Coyote in the Basket of My Ribs (Kelsay Books 2023). She co-hosts the North Bay Poetics monthly zoom and hosts this fall's  #NotJustPretty (zoom series in collaboration with Broken Spine Arts\, UK).
