The area toward the mountain was called Niuhelewai af ter a now-diverted stream that was fed by a collection of springs in the a rea. Water from the springs now flow directly to the ocean through Kapāla ma Canal. According to oral histories\, Hawaiian royalty once gathered at Niuhelewai for healing ceremonies.
