Through raga-inspired phrasing\, cross-genre soundscapes\, and audience participation\, the perf ormance traces stages of anger\, grief\, rejection\, and relationships - i nviting discovery\, presence\, and deep listening in an AI-shaped world. T he work moves through lived emotional landscapes--such as anger\, rejectio n\, grief\, and relationships\, joy\, realization\, each unfolding in disc ernible stages. For example\, before exploring the stages of anger\, the a udience is invited to sense the initial rise of tension through sound itse lf. Drawing from raga phrasing and cross-genre influences\, the voice beco mes a mirror of human behavior\, revealing emotion through resonance. Audi ence participation is integral\, encouraging discovery and presence. In an era shaped by AI and optimization\, this work re-centers listening\, embo diment\, and emotional truth.Tonight's concert is an offering by the nonpr ofit organization "Arts for More"--which seeks multitudinous ways to bring cultural expression to audiences while in the process raising funds for o rganizations in critical need of funds to disperse in this "time of consta nt emergency." Ramya Shankar will designate the specific beneficiary of th is benefit. The Ensemble will also present this project on the afternoon o f Sunday\, May 3rd at San Francisco's Community Music Center as part of th e San Francisco International Arts Festival.Ramya Shankar is a genre-blurr ing sound artist and vocalist whose voice flows from deep Carnatic and fol k roots of India into jazz and global music. Her voice is a vessel for emo tion\, healing\, and human connection—fusing improvisation\, rhythm\, an d story. As a composer and producer\, Ramya crafts immersive sonic landsca pes that explore the shared human experience—Love\, Grief\, Courage\, Ad venture\, Joy—using the voice as a medium to trace emotional stages and reveal the profound textures of human feeling. Her work invites listeners into discovery\, presence\, and resonance.Peter Barshay is a veteran bassi st with a strong reputation built over decades of performing on both the N ew York City and San Francisco Bay Area jazz scenes. He has collaborated w ith jazz luminaries such as Kenny Barron\, Freddie Hubbard\, Sonny Stitt\, Kenny Werner\, Shirley Horn\, Woody Shaw\, Pharoah Sanders\, Blue Mitchel l\, Tony Williams\, Joe Henderson\, Joe Lovano\, Johnny Griffin\, and Bobb y McFerrin. His sound reflects a lifetime of musical exploration—from sa lsa and straight-ahead jazz to fusion\, avant-garde\, and music rooted in Afro-Cuban and Brazilian traditions.Varun Pattabhiraman is a Mridangist ba sed in San Francisco\, California. In addition to the mridangam\, Varun ex plores hybrid acoustic and electronic percussion setups that include the k hanjira\, ghatam\, konakkol\, drum set and electronic drum pads. He regula rly performs concerts in the Bay Area and is a member of fusion groups inc luding the Sufi-Rock band CaliQawwali.Unpil Baek is a pianist\, improviser \, and composer whose music flows freely across jazz\, classical\, global\ , sacred\, and experimental traditions. He also performs regularly with Vi tamin Em\, a chamber jazz collective known for its joyful\, genre-bending performances that blend improvisation with classical and world music.Zach Mondlick is a Berkeley-based drummer. He received his Masters of Music fr om Berklee College of Music\, where he studied Contemporary Performance an d Production. Zach is the music teacher for The Presentations School in So noma.
