In this talk\, I will first d iscuss several design approaches to tune and control pore sizes at sub-ang strom level to achieve desired gas separation performances via graphene an d fullerene membranes. Concepts of ion-gating and entropic selectivity wil l be demonstrated via molecular simulations. Next\, I will introduce a new mechanism of superionic Li-ion transport in glassy halides such as LiNbxT a1-xCl6 enabled by anion vibrations and revealed by molecular dynamics sim ulations via machine-learning force fields of ab initio quality. In the th ird topic\, I will show a deep-learning-in-chemistry case study where the challenge to locate the hydrides in atomically precise metal-hydride nanoc luster catalysts was addressed by convolutional neural networks. In each o f the studies\, one will see a close interplay between computation and exp eriment\, to understand and design functional materials.Bio:De-en Jiang ho lds the H. Eugene McBrayer Chair in Chemical Engineering in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Vanderbilt University as well as a courtesy appoint in the Department of Chemistry. He earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Chemistry from Peking University and a Ph.D. in Chemis try in 2005 from UCLA. Following his graduate studies\, he worked at Oak R idge National Laboratory\, first as a postdoctoral researcher and later as a staff scientist. In 2014\, he joined the University of California\, Riv erside (UCR)\, where he served as a Professor of Chemistry and a cooperati ng faculty member in both Chemical &\; Environmental Engineering and Ma terials Science and Engineering. In July 2022\, he transitioned to Vanderb ilt University. Dr. Jiang’s research centers on computational materials and chemistry\, with a focus on applications in energy and the environment . His contributions to the field have been recognized with prestigious hon ors\, including the DOE Early Career Award and the Presidential Early Care er Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). He is also a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Dr. Jiang’s scholarly influence is reflected in his recognition as a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher in both 2023 and 2024.
