Specifica lly\, we analyze Sp(n) gauge theories in four and eight dimensions. Our an alysis shows that the mod-2 Witten anomaly in 4-dimensional Sp(n) gauge th eory cannot be canceled by the Green-Schwarz mechanism. On the other hand\ , we find that the mod-2 anomalies in 8-dimensional N=1 Sp(n) gauge theory can be canceled\, which is consistent with the expectation that this theo ry has a string theory realization.
