Location: In person only, Auditorium, Administration Building, Corewell Health William Beaumont University HospitalClick here for the streaming linkPresenters:Changiz Mohiyeddini, PhDProfessor, Department of Foundational Medical Studies, Oakland University William Beaumont School of MedicinePierre Morris, MDAssociate Dean of Clinical Education, Associate Professor Foundational Medical Studies, Oakland University William Beaumont School of MedicineDescription:Healthcare providers face increasing mental health challenges, yet the nuanced distinction between burnout and moral injury (MI) is often overlooked, leading to misdiagnosis and ineffective interventions. We will explore the etiology, symptomatology, causes, consequences, and correlates of burnout, while introducing the concept of moral injury. This workshop will highlight the overlap and distinctions between burnout and MI, enhance awareness of these issues, improve diagnosis, and support tailored approaches to mental health care for healthcare professionals. Objectives:At the conclusion of this activity, learners should be better able to:Explain the key differences between burnout and moral injury and how they manifest in healthcare professionals.Analyze the symptoms and causes of burnout and moral injury to differentiate between the two conditions in case studies provided.Evaluate the effectiveness of current interventions for burnout and moral injury, and propose alternative strategies for supporting healthcare workers.Apply strategies learned to solve scenarios involving burnout and moral injury, aiming to provide appropriate support for affected individuals.Design a tailored action plan to support mental health and resilience in their own healthcare settings, incorporating an understanding of both burnout and moral injury.
