Utah Communty Theatre Event

My name is Maren Scriven Swensen, and I was recently put in as the president of the Utah Theatre Bloggers Association. I am writing this because I am very interested in gathering several theatre makers in Utah together to see how we can all work together for a more mutually beneficial relationship and better understanding of our goals for the arts in Utah. As a child I remember going to my grandmother’s house and grabbing the arts section of the Sunday newspaper and devouring all the content I could. The way we consume news and media now is ever changing, and we need to be willing to change with it. When Nancy Melich retired from the Salt Lake Tribune as their main arts critic and writer, they did not replace her. This is a pattern that we are seeing all over the country. There are arguments that perhaps the days of arts criticism are over. I can understand the concerns and am willing to be a part of these conversations and considerations. Criticism of criticism is valid, and important conversations need to be had. This is one of the reasons I would like to open dialogue. How can we be open to the future of the arts press? I view every review as a wonderful record of the amazing theatre community we have in Utah. With over 2900 reviews since UTBA started, we have a strong showing of the importance of theatre in Utah, from professional to community. As a member of the American Theatre Critics Association, we are one of the only organizations that sees the importance and value of including community theatre in this record. I would love to see us grow into something more, perhaps a place where we can advertise upcoming shows, link to tickets, auditions, or more. Imagine a playbill.com or broadway.com exclusively for Utah Theatre. We are organizing a meeting to continue this dialogue. West Valley Arts Center has been gracious enough to offer to host. We will be meeting at their center on May 11 at 2pm. I do know that some organizations have shows and rehearsals, but we feel like this is the best timing we can do. Please send someone from your organization if you can. Please RSVP to me at maren@utahtheatrebloggers.com so that we can have a headcount. We will also provide a zoom option for anyone who may be able to attend virtually but not in person. Thank you again for all that you do. Please consider working with me and my team as we try to figure out what we can do to move forward into the new age of theatre in Utah. Please feel free to pass this message on to those who you think would benefit from attending this event.
