(NET) Vega C • SMILE

An Avio Vega C rocket, designated VV29, will launch ESA's & CAS' SMILE mission into a highly elliptical orbit. The Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer (SMILE) is a joint initiative between ESA and the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The 2.3 tonne spacecraft will study Earth’s magnetic environment on a global scale. The aim of the mission is to build a more complete understanding of the Sun-Earth connection. ESA is providing the payload module, launch vehicle, and one of the scientific instruments for SMILE, while CAS is responsible for three scientific instruments and the mission and science operations. For a few weeks post-launch, SMILE will gradually propel itself into its science-performing orbit of 121000 x 5000km. This is the first mission handled by Avio as launch provider.
