2026 Medical Education Week: OBGYN Grand Rounds: Not All Health Problems are Medical

Location: In person; Auditorium, Admin Building, Corewell Health WBUH AND Streamed via Teams - Join herePresenters:Jennifer Hartke, J.D.; Mary Smyth, M.D., MPHDescription:Since 2009 Beaumont, and now Corewell Health, has had a Medical Legal Partnership (MPL) designed to address and improve the health and well-being of patients by partnering healthcare professionals and lawyers to eliminate barriers to healthcare and to ensure that patients basic needs for food, housing, education, healthcare and safety are met. Low income (under-resourced) patients often suffer from illnesses exacerbated by non-medical factors such as substandard housing, utility shutoffs, and lack of health insurance, special education needs, and child support and guardianship issues. Our Patient Legal Support (PLS) program is a collaboration between hospital personnel and our local Lakeshore Legal Aid public law firm. It helps families resolve these problems by providing them free legal advice and assistance. Since its inception PLS has welcomed Medical Students and Residents to learn about and participate in our MLP in a variety of ways. Objectives:At the conclusion of this activity, learners should be better able to:Know what a Medical Legal Partnership is and how it functions.Know how to refer a Corewell Health patient to PLS.Know of the various ways we have involved medical learners with PLS.
