DESCRIPTION:Our guest speaker is Prof Bernard Fourie\, Director (Interim)
  of the TB@UP Centre for TB Research\, Faculty of Health Sciences\, Univer
 sity of Pretoria.The title of his talk is: Fifteen decades since the disc
 overy of the TB bacillus: Why does the world's deadliest disease persist?F
 ollowing Robert Kock's discovery of the TB bacillus in 1882\, several majo
 r scientific discoveries in the early 1900's promised rapid control and el
 imination of the disease\, but didn't even get close to meeting the global
  epidemiological targets for control. We will be looking at impediments a
 nd critical knowledge gaps preventing control of the disease\, and will hi
 ghlight research contributions from UP scientists in the development of ne
 w diagnostics\, therapeutics and vaccines for TB.
