 gy: History\, Present\, and Future”Tuesday\, November 17\, 2026\, 11:30
 a.m.201 LGRT\, UMass Amherst(Refreshments at 11:15 a.m.) Abstract:Fossilf
uels have been used overwhelmingly across many industrial sectors in recen
tdecades\, leading to significant CO2 and other pollutant emissions\,low e
fficiency\, and unsustainability. Clean and efficient energy storage andco
nversion via electrochemical reactionsassociated with hydrogen\, oxygen\,
and water have attracted substantialattention for energy and environmental
sustainability. Among compelling energytechnologies\, proton exchange mem
brane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are a promisingzero-emission power source for tr
ansportation\, helping mitigate environmentalpollution and reduce fossil-f
uel dependence. Meanwhile\, water electrolyzershave been clearly identifie
d as the sustainable pathway to produce cheap greenhydrogen efficiently us
ing renewable electricity. However\, current materials\,including catalyst
s\, membranes\, and ionomers\, cannot meet the challengingtargets of high
efficiency\, low cost\, and long-term durability for hydrogenfuel cells an
 d water electrolyzers. Developing high-performance catalysts fromearth-abu
ndant elements to replace current precious metals is crucial formaking the
se hydrogen technologies viable for large-scale clean energyapplications.
This talk discusses recent advances\, achievements\, andperspectives on de
veloping low-cost\, high-performance catalysts based on newlyemerging atom
 ically dispersed single-metal-site-rich metal-nitrogen-carbonmaterials for
sustainable\, clean hydrogen technologies. Bio:Gang Wu is the Elvera and
William R.Stuckenberg Endowed Professor at Washington University in St. L
ouis. He is anECS Fellow and has substantial expertise in electrochemical
science andengineering. He completed all his degrees\, including Ph.D.\, a
t the HarbinInstitute of Technology in 2004. After extensive postdoctoral
training atTsinghua University\, the University of South Carolina\, and Lo
s Alamos NationalLaboratory (LANL)\, he became a staff scientist at LANL i
 n 2010. Then\, he joinedSUNY Buffalo as a tenure-track assistant professor
in 2014 and was quicklypromoted to associate professor in 2018 and to ful
l professor in 2020. After a decade of serviceat SUNY Buffalo\, he joined
Washington University in St. Louis in 2024. His currentresearch focuses on
advanced electrocatalysis and catalysis for hydrogen andelectrochemical e
nergy technologies\, such as polymer electrolyte fuel cells\, waterelectro
 lysis\, CO2 reduction\, electrosynthesis\, and carbon-freenitrogen electro
chemistry. He is also interested in developing clean-energy-relatedheterog
eneous catalysis\, including efficient ammonia synthesis and cracking\, to
address the grand challenges of hydrogen storage and transportation. Dr. W
u isa leading scientist in the exploration of single-metal-site catalysts
forsustainable electrocatalysis\, as evidenced by more than 400 papers inp
restigious journals and approximately 70\,000 citations\, with an H-index
of 142(Google Scholar ). Dr. Wu has been recognizedby Clarivate Analytics
as a Highly Cited Researcher since 2018. He serves as anAssociate Editor f
or a few journals\, including the Journal of theElectrochemical Society (J
ES)\, the Electrochemical Society’s flagshipjournal\, and Applied Cataly
 sis B: Environment and Energy.
