DESCRIPTION:The 7th Sunday after Easter (Had'bshabo Shbi'oyo d'Qymtho) and
the commemoration of the Feast of Pentecost (Hido d'Phentiqostee) accordi
ng to the Liturgical Calendar of the Syriac Orthodox Church. Pentecost is
the celebration of the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles (Acts 2:
1). It is celebrated on Sunday\, the fiftieth day after Easter.During the
Liturgy\, after the service of the Blessed Virgin Mary\, a special service
is held. The service is called in Syriac 'Syom Burke' or "kneeling". It c
onsists of three parts: The first is addressed to the Father\, the second
to the Son and the third to the Holy Spirit. During this service a bowl wi
th pure water and a bundle of walnut leaves are placed on the first step o
f the altar. Each of the three parts commences with an opening prayer by th
e celebrant followed by hymns\, other prayers and readings from the Script
ures. After a Litany\, a deacon cries in a loud voice chanting\, "Let us b
eseech the Lord and kneel down."The celebrant then kneels before the altar
and the clergy and the entire congregation do likewise. They gently touch
one another's back with the tips of their fingers repeatedly alerting eac
h other\, as did the disciples at the time of the descent of the Holy Spir
it upon them\, to prepare themselves for the coming of the Comforter. The
deacons and the people chant "Kyrie eleison" repeatedly while the celebran
t recites a prayer silently. Once the celebrant is done with the silent pr
ayer\, he shouts aloud "Stand up by the power of God."All the faithful sta
nd up reverently in their respective places. One of the deacons holds the
bowl of water and stands at the right side of the celebrant. The celebrant
takes the bundle of walnut leaves from the bowl and sprinkles crosswise t
he altar three times. Likewise\, he sprinkles the clergy and the deacons.
He then goes down from the sanctuary and sprinkles the congregation with t
he drops of water which signify the gifts of the Holy Spirit that descende
d upon the disciples in the Upper Room\, encircling the congregation and r
eturning to the sanctuary. While sprinkling\, the priest chants "May the H
oly Spirit come and descend upon each one of you."Likewise\, the second an
d third parts are performed. At the end\, the celebrant offers a Hutomo.(E
xplanation of the service courtesy SOR website) Hymn for Feast of Pentecos
t by St. Severus the Great of Antioch:God of all and Father\, you became k
nown already in the Law and Prophets. You have explained and shown through
them your only Son and Word\, and the Holy Spirit\, but not plainly\, bec
ause they were not able to comprehend the revelation of one Godhead of the
Trinity. As the Word and God appeared in the flesh and became a man for o
ur sake without change\, he showed himself equal to you\, Father\, by the
astonishing deeds which he performed. After he ascended to heaven\, he sho
ws clearly to those who have become perfect the Godhead of the Spirit Para
clete\, who in the form of the flames of fire descended and settled upon t
he Holy Apostles. He did this in order to burn away and bring about the di
sappearance of the thorns which our father Adam's transgression of the com
mand once planted there. They also taught us to praise one God in three ho
ly hypostases\, to whom\, bowing\, we say\, 'Praise be to you'. Please not
e that after the Feast of Pentecost\, the regular twice-weekly fasting of
Wednesday and Friday resumes. A Study on Wednesday and Friday Fasts of th
