DESCRIPTION:St. Ephrem the Syrian (Mor Aphrem Suryoyo) according to the li
 turgical calendar of the Syriac Orthodox Church. Poet\, teacher\, orator &
 amp\; defender of the faith Mor Aphrem was born in A.D. 306 in Nisibis\, m
 odern day Turkey (North-west of Mosul\, Iraq). He was ordained deacon in c
 . A.D. 338 and served the Bishop of Nisibis\, Mor Yac'ub\, who participate
 d in the Synod of Nicaea (AD 325). He lived as a solitary &amp\; never ent
 ered into Priesthood remaining a deacon till death. Ephrem wrote exclusive
 ly in Syriac\, the Edessene dialect of Aramaic\, but his works were transl
 ated into Armenian &amp\; Greek\, &amp\; via the latter into Latin and Sla
 vonic. Much of Ephrem's exegetical\, dogmatic &amp\; ascetic works are in 
 verse form. Tradition tells us that Ephrem heard the heretical ideas put i
 nto song first &amp\; in order to counteract them made up his own hymns. H
 e wrote several polemical works refuting the heresies of Marcion\, Bardais
 an\, Mani\, the Arians &amp\; the Anomoeans. He wrote widely regarded Bibl
 ical commentaries on Genesis and the Diatesseron. His writings extensively
  employ typology &amp\; symbolism. St. Ephrem the Syrian\, left us in Syri
 ac hundreds of hymns &amp\; poems on the faith that inflamed &amp\; inspir
 ed the whole Church. His memory is revered by all\, Syriac Orthodox\, and 
 Nestorians/Chaldean. They call him the "sun of the Syrians\," ( Shemsho d
 ’Suryoye) &amp\; the "harp of the Holy Spirit" (Kenoro d’Ruho) His lit
 urgical poetry had a great influence on Greek hymnography as well. The Cat
 holic Church has declared him 'Doctor of the Holy Church' St. Ephrem depar
 ted to his heavenly abode on 9th of June\, A.D. 373. His major feast is co
 mmemorated each year in the Syriac Orthodox Church on the first Saturday o
