ONLoʻi Kalo Mini Park was once part of a vast network of taro patches tha
t covered Kapālama. The area toward the mountain was called Niuhelewai af
ter a now-diverted stream that was fed by a collection of springs in the a
rea. Water from the springs now flow directly to the ocean through Kapāla
ma Canal. According to oral histories\, Hawaiian royalty once gathered at
Niuhelewai for healing ceremonies. It was home to Haumea\, the Hawaiian go
ddess of fertility and childbirth.Once part of a network of over 45 loʻi
kalo\, Niuhelewai is the last remaining as the other loʻi have been fille
d in to build present-day Honolulu Community College and urban Kalihi. Niu
helewai was once overcome with weeds\, but since 2015\, Robert Silva\, his
family\, and his students from HCC have been helping to restore the wahi
pana. Community workdays are hosted every first Saturday of the month. T
asks may include weeding\, planting\, harvesting\, and working in the ʻau
wai. Be prepared to get wet and muddy\, and to work hard! Snacks will be p
rovided. Learn more about the Park and our host: http://www.civilbeat.or
