 健康体操の影響も受けつつ形成されたものであり、健
 康増進に役立つのも納得がいく。ひとくちにヨガとい
 っても、その起源から現代に至るまで、幾度もの大き
 な変容を遂げてきた。最初期のヨガは瞑想と呼吸法を
 中心としており、健康体操とはほど遠い。しかし当時
 の文献も、ヨガ修行の最初の効果として健康を挙げる
 。今回の講義ではヨガの歴史を概観し、ヨガと健康の
 関係を、各時代のヨガの特徴に注目しながら検討する
 。Modern yoga was shaped in part under the influence of modern Westernphy
 sical exercise\, so it is hardly surprising that it should promote health.
 But yoga is not one single thing: from its origins to the present day it h
 asundergone repeated and far-reaching transformations. The earliest yoga c
 enteredon meditation and breath control\, and was far removed from gymnast
 ic exercise.Even so\, the texts of that period do list health among the fi
 rst effects ofyoga practice. This lecture surveys the history of yoga and 
 examines therelationship between yoga and health\, with attention to what
