The area toward the mountain was called Niuhelewai after a now-diverted stream that was fed by a collection of springs in the area. Water from the springs now flow directly to the ocean through Kapā lama Canal. According to oral histories\, Hawaiian royalty once gathered a t Niuhelewai for healing ceremonies. It was home to Haumea\, the Hawaiian goddess of fertility and childbirth.Once part of a network of over 45 loʻ i kalo\, Niuhelewai is the last remaining as the other loʻi have been fil led in to build present-day Honolulu Community College and urban Kalihi. N iuhelewai was once overcome with weeds\, but since 2015\, Robert Silva\, h is family\, and his students from HCC have been helping to restore the wah i pana. Community workdays are hosted every first Saturday of the month.T asks may include weeding\, planting\, harvesting\, and working in the ʻau wai. Be prepared to get wet and muddy\, and to work hard!
