They provide rich clues regarding their production proce sses and the traces of reader use. These clues can be understood as "data. " How do bibliographers and art historians read and utilize this "data" in their research? What processes do they employ when examining original man uscripts and early printed books\, or their digital surrogates? This sympo sium will focus on these methodological questions. We are honored to welco me Dr. Eric White (Princeton University Library)\, a leading scholar of ea rly European printed books\, and Dr. Pamela Patton (Princeton University)\ , renowned for her research on the role of images in medieval Spain and th e surrounding regions. They will present their specific research processes and data utilization methods. Furthermore\, case studies will be presente d by researchers working on the printing and decoration of early printed b ooks. Together\, we will engage in a multi-faceted examination of how "dat a" is being utilized on the front lines of book studies. During the break\ , we will hold a mini exhibition of related facsimiles.
