The area toward the mountain was called Niuhelew ai after a now-diverted stream that was fed by a collection of springs in the area. Water from the springs now flow directly to the ocean through Ka pālama Canal. According to oral histories\, Hawaiian royalty once gathere d at Niuhelewai for healing ceremonies. It was home to Haumea\, the Hawaii an goddess of fertility and childbirth.Once part of a network of over 45 l oʻi kalo\, Niuhelewai is the last remaining as the other loʻi have been filled in to build present-day Honolulu Community College and urban Kalihi . Niuhelewai was once overcome with weeds\, but since 2015\, Robert Silva\ , his family\, and his students from HCC have been helping to restore the wahi pana. Community workdays are hosted every first Saturday of the mont h. Tasks may include weeding\, planting\, harvesting\, and working in the ʻauwai.
