However\, as the number of process models increases\, the\nnumb er of duplicated models also increases because the same process is\noften carried out in different parts of the organisation. As a result\,\nthe lev el of process model reuse has been found to be surprisingly\nlow\, and thi s leads to wasted effort modelling processes which already\nexist. Given t his situation\, the motivation for this study was to\ndevelop a modelling method which increased the level of reuse of\nprocess models in a reposito ry. We named this modelling method EPReS\n(Enterprise Process Reuse System ). This study specifically focussed on\nimproving factors which impacted i ncreased process model reuse.\nIncorporated in this study is also the firs t method to objectively\nmeasure the Level of Reuse of process models in a repository. Finally\,\nthis study describes the system dynamics that are setup within an\norganisation when process models are not reused.\nA pragm atic research paradigm was adopted to answer the research\nquestions. Usin g a Design Science Research strategy\, EPReS was\ndesigned and tested in a real-world setting in a large South African\nfinancial services organisat ion. A mixed-methods approach was used\,\nconsisting of semi-structured in terviews conducted with Process\nModellers and a quantitative analysis of the process repository. EPReS\nincorporates reuse concepts from the softwa re development domain.\nThis study makes three contributions to knowledge. Firstly\, this study\ndevelops a new modelling method which increases the level of reuse of\nprocess models in a process repository. Secondly\, the study develops a\nmeasure which can be used to determine the level of pro cess model\nreuse in a process repository. Finally\, it explains the conse quences\nfor the organisation\, using system dynamics\, of not reusing pro cess\nmodels\, and illustrates how vicious cycles are established\, which\ nresult in continually increasing costs. This study has made practical\nco ntributions as it also offers the vendors of process modelling tools\noppo rtunities to further enhance their products by incorporating\nelements of EPReS to facilitate the increased reuse of complete\nprocess models by use rs.\nThis study has limitations. This research project was carried out in a\nsingle organisation and data collection from semi-structured\ninterview s was limited to those Process Modellers who were using the\nnew modelling method. It is possible that other Process Modellers\ncould identify addit ional factors impacting the consequences of not\nreusing complete process models. Also\, the new modelling method\ndesigned is dependent on the unde rlying architecture of the modelling\ntool in use and therefore\, this met hod will not be suitable for every\navailable process modelling tool. Futu re studies may improve the\nmethod further or better quantify the conseque nces of not reusing\nprocess models.\n\nBio:\nRoss has been involved in bu siness process management and process\nimprovement for over 25 years. He g raduated as a chemical engineer in\n1986\, worked for Anglo American in th e gold mining industry\, then\nworked for a process control consultancy wh ere he was involved in\ndesigning\, testing and implementing control syste ms in various\nindustries (mining\, brewing\, iron & steel). In 1995 he to ok a leap of\nfaith and took up a position at Nedbank improving and automa ting\nprocesses. In 2005 Ross left Nedbank to do freelance consulting work \nduring which he has worked at Telkom\, Engen\, Government Pension\nAdmin istration Agency\, BCX and again at Nedbank. He has also done\nsoftware de velopment in Pascal\, C++\, Visual Basic and Java. He\ncurrently contracts to Discovery Bank\nBeing an engineer\, his interest is in “how things w ork” and common\npatterns and principles across apparently unrelated iss ues /\nprocesses. He believes that the identification of such patterns and \nsynthesizing a design which accommodates different scenarios lies at\nth e heart of effective software and process automation. A fundamental\nactiv ity in process automation is the modeling of business processes\nusing a m odeling tool. It became apparent that organisations are\nprepared to spend vast amounts of money modeling processes and are\nprepared to model the s ame process over and over again. It makes sense\nthat processes which have been previously modelled should be reused in\nfuture projects to reduce c osts and save time.\nParticularly\, Ross is interested in maximizing the v alue process\nengineers through process modeling in large organizations. A ll (most)\nlarge organization model their business processes\, and yet\, t acitly\,\nmany involved will admit that they do not believe that they are adding\nthe value that has been promised.
