The area toward the mountain was called Niuhelewai after a now-diverted stream that was fed by a collection of springs in the area. Water from the springs now flow directly to the ocean through Kapā lama Canal. According to oral histories\, Hawaiian royalty once gathered a t Niuhelewai for healing ceremonies. It was home to Haumea\, the Hawaiian goddess of fertility and childbirth.Once part of a network of over 45 loʻ i kalo\, Niuhelewai is the last remaining as the other loʻi have been fil led in to build present-day Honolulu Community College and urban Kalihi. N iuhelewai was once overcome with weeds\, but since 2015\, Robert Silva\, h is family\, and his students from HCC have been helping to restore the wah i pana. Community workdays are hosted every first Saturday of the month.T asks may include weeding\, planting\, harvesting\, and working in the ʻau wai.
