Third Sunday of Great Lent (Paralytic/Palsy Sunday) (msharyo)

msharyoThe 'Third Sunday' of the Great Lent and Healing of the Paralytic (had'bshabo tlithoyo d'sawmo, al M'sharyo) according to the liturgical calendar of the Syriac Orthodox Church in Malankara. St. Mark's Gospel recounts the healing of the paralyzed man by our Lord & saviour Jesus Christ. Word of Christ's presence spread through the town of Capernaum. There, dozens gathered where He was residing to listen to Him preach the Good News of the Heavenly Kingdom. A group brought with them a paralyzed man, whom they believed could be healed by Christ. As the crowd was too great, they decided to open up the roof of the room & send the man down towards Jesus. Christ was moved by the extent of their true faith & proclaimed, 'son your sins are forgiven" Our Lord is telling us that the spiritual effect of sin is akin to the physical torment of paralysis. Sin is the cause of all sickness & suffering in our lives. Some of the scribes were dumbfounded at this & questioned the authority of Christ to forgive others of their sins. Our Lord answered saying "that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins" It is only through repentance of our sins, & gaining forgiveness from our Lord that we may escape the spiritual sicknesses that plagues our soul.
