Passion (Hasho) Week

The commencement of the Passion Week (S'habtho d'Has'ho) according to the liturgical calendar of the Syriac Orthodox Church in Malankara. The days from Palm Sunday to Holy Saturday are known as the Passion Week (S'habtho d'Has'ho) a week designed to focus our attention on the "passion," or suffering, of Christ. As we travel into the Passion Week, please keep in mind the following instructions generally given by the Malpans (learned clergy of liturgy) of India in regards to Passion Week: 1) The usual "Qawmo" trisagion (Qadishat Aloho/Holy art thou oh God) is not recited. Instead, a unique different "Qawmo" for each day, according to the (events that occurred in the Bible) is recited. If you don’t know the Qawmo for the specific day, then you can recite  a ‘common Qawmo’, “Lord forgive us through Your Passion”. 2) No praying of “Shlom lekh/Hail Mary” or seeking the intercession of any saints. 3) The veil (curtain) of the sanctuary (Madbaho) remains closed for the prayers. 4) The prayers of the hours in the church are conducted with lit candles on the M’northo (Gogultha, cross stand). 5) NO kiss of peace (kaikasthuthi) is given amongst believers. No kissing of the altar, no kissing of other parts of the Church such as the Gospel stand, icons, relics, including the M’northo (Gogultha, Cross-stand). Instead we bow our heads in veneration. 6. NO kissing of a Priest (Qashisho/Achen) or Bishop's (Hasyo/Thirumeni) hand (Kai Muthu) or handcross. 7) The Gospel reading is read by standing at the ‘parts inside the rails’ (Azhikakam). During hasho the words "Peace be to you all" is not said by the priest as a prelude to reciting the Gospel. 8) There are no 40 prostrations after the Noon prayer (like that of Great Lent). 9) St. Ephrem's bovuso (Lord Thy mercy upon us... Karthave Kripa cheyaname) which is normally chanted during Soothara of other seasons, will be replaced by a version specific to Passion Week. 10) No Quqalion sung after Nicene Creed recited during Passion Week. 11) During Holy Thursday service, we skip two stanzas (3rd and 4th) of the hymn ‘Come the time of prayer’ (Yachikendum samayamitha). 12) Instead of the Sh'himo (regular weekday prayers) or the Great Lent prayers; the Phanqitho d'has'ho (haasha namaskaram) will be prayed. The hymns of the daily prayers & various liturgies will be sung in the Hasho tones (Hashonoyo) which are specific for this blessed week. May our Lord bless all of those who use this week to fast, pray & journey to Him.
