2025 Medical Education Month: The Real World - Standardized Patients Tell Real Histories

Location: In person only, OUWB Lg Classroom A, Administration Building, Corewell Health William Beaumont University HospitalPresenter:Leon Pedell, MD Instructor, Department of Foundational Medical Studies, Oakland University William Beaumont School of MedicineDescription:First and second year students often complain of the lack of “real patient” encounters prior to their clerkships. As a part of the new Integrative Medicine Program at OUWB SOM, SP’s volunteer to be interviewed and examined by first and second year students giving their real medical stories. After the encounters, the students debrief with faculty and get much-needed practice doing presentations. The SP’s enjoy the unscripted encounters as well.Objectives:At the conclusion of this activity, learners should be better able to:Use this new program for medical studentsIdentify needs for preparation for clerkshipsCreate a new avenue for SP’s to involve themselves in student educationReproduce real world encounters for early medical school educationThis activity is approved for 1.0* AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™
