2026 Medical Education Week: Beyond the White Coat: Implementing Sustainable Mental Health Initiatives in Undergraduate Medical Education

Location: Virtually via Zoom - Join herePresenters:Shivapriya Chandu, MS3; Riya Chhabra, MS4; Berkley Browne-Holtz, Ph.D.; Rohit Ray, MS1Description:Medical students experience high rates of burnout, anxiety, and depression, yet many institutions struggle with inconsistent engagement, limited visibility, or fragmented implementation of wellness initiatives. This session addresses gaps in awareness, sustainability, and integration of mental health programming by highlighting a comprehensive, student-informed model implemented at OUWB. By sharing successful strategies and lessons learned, this presentation aims to equip medical educators and learners with practical approaches to building a culture of compassion and proactive mental health support.Objectives:At the conclusion of this activity, learners should be better able to:Describe the structure and rationale of mental health and wellness initiatives implemented within undergraduate medical education at OUWB.Identify key institutional, faculty, and student-driven components that support effective and sustainable medical student mental health programming.Analyze strategies used to address burnout, stress, and suicide risk among medical students, including embedded therapy models and suicide prevention training (safeTALK).Equip medical educators and learners with an overview of mental health resources available to them and the practical skills to build a culture of compassion.Apply lessons learned from OUWB’s mental health initiatives to inform wellness program development or enhancement at other medical schools.
