In the Scripture readings of this day, we observe an emphasis on God freeing His people who were enslaved, and giving them ordinances to live by. Unfortunately, we learn that they often rejected His guidance, choosing to be subject to their wanton passions. As a consequence of God's wrath, the once freed people are again conquered by their enemies. Likewise, in our own lives we are often enslaved by our excessive desires which give rise to sin. Our repeated and unrepentant choice to continue sinning leads to our spiritual destruction. Christ's rejection of Satan's temptation in the wilderness provides for us the hope that we too can resist the excessive desires that give rise to sin. Rejection of temptation and actively avoiding sin is a bold proclamation that we will serve God alone, despite the splendour offered by Satan. Through fasting and prayer we are made free of the desires which would otherwise fill our hearts and minds, preventing us from prioritizing our relationship with God.
