Bokashi is a Japanese term for fermented organic matter, which refers to a pre-composting method that ferments food scraps in an airtight container using inoculated bran. This anaerobic process uses beneficial microorganisms to "pickle" food waste (including meat and dairy) instead of rotting it, which is faster than traditional composting and results in a nutrient-rich pre-compost. The fermented material must then be buried in the ground or added to a traditional compost pile to finish decomposing into usable soil amendment.
