Saturday before Hosanna (noohomeh d-lo`ozor/Lazarus' Saturday)

The Saturday of the raising of Lazarus (Shabtho d'noohomeh d-lo'ozor) according to the Liturgical Calendar of the Syriac Orthodox Church in Malankara Today the Church commemorates the Raising of Lazarus from the dead (noohomeh d-lo'ozor) as written in St. John 11:28-46. The raising of Lazarus is a prefigure of the resurrection for all who believe in Jesus Christ as Lord & savior. Lazarus is venerated as a saint & even from the earliest centuries in the Holy Land, Christians would celebrate on the Saturday before Palm Sunday by visiting the site from where Lazarus was raised to life (written in the pilgrimage record of Egeria). Today the Syriac Christians of Kerala, India (St. Thomas Christians/Malankara Nazranis) have a tradition of preparing "Kozhukattai" Kozhukattai is a steamed dumpling made from rice flour. It is a sweet dish filled with Jaggery and coconut. The folklore of the Malankara Nazrani community is that this dish is believed to be a favourite delicacy of Jesus Christ. According to the Gospel of St. John chapter 12, six days before the Passover, Jesus returned to Bethany & dined at the home of Lazarus & his two sisters Martha & Mary. Being companions of Christ, they prepared His favourite dish. This same dish is prepared by the Syriac Christians of Kerala in honor of this event & shared among family members on this day annually.
