About US: At 1951 Coffee Company, we blend the warmth of coffee with the strength of community.We are a non-profit (501c3) social enterprise that works with refugees and immigrants to break down the financial and social barriers of starting a new life in the United States.Founded in 2015 by Rachel Taber and Doug Hewitt, 1951 Coffee operates a free Barista Training Program serving refugees and immigrants (40 adults and 25 youths per year) in the San Francisco Bay Area. Over 520 people have graduated from this program since 2016. 1951 Coffee also operates its own cafe location just two block south of the UC Berkeley campus at 2410 Channing Way. This cafe location serves as a convergence point for the immigrant community and the larger Bay Area community. Having employed 77 people, the cafe currently employs 10 immigrant staff in multiple entry level and leadership roles. The cafe program at 1951 Coffee has put $2.4million in wages and benefits into the immigrant community since 2017. Starting in 2021, 1951 Coffee began offering business incubation support for graduates of their program.
