The Evening of the Lights, and Reaching the Harbor (Ramsho d-Naheera, Wa'de dalmino) according to the Liturgical Calendar of the Syriac Orthodox Church in Malankara. On the eve of Passion Monday, ie the evening prayers following Palm Sunday (had'bshabo d'Oosha'ne) service, the Syriac Orthodox Church celebrates the "Order of the Entrance into Heaven" (Vadhe Dalmino/Reaching the harbor) also known as "The Lights" (Naheera). This service is based on the Parable of the 10 Virgins/Bridesmaids awaiting the bridegroom as written in the Gospel of St. Matthew chapter 25. The parable reminds us as we enter this week that it is only through a life of dedication to God, vigilance, fasting & prayer can we be ready for the Resurrection & to welcome the Bridegroom into our lives. The service commences with a procession with all lights off & the curtain of the altar drawn closed. The clergy and the faithful hold lit candles during the procession which gives the service its name. The procession may be done inside the church, which concludes at the front of the closed altar, or outside the church, concluding at the front of the closed door. The service ends with a dramatic entrance into the altar resembling the entrance of the wise virgins into heaven; the celebrant stands in front of the closed curtain & chants the hymn 'al haw tar'o three times, each time the deacons & the faithful repeat after him. Then the priest shouts thrice "Moran, Moran ftah lan tar'okh!" (O Lord, O Lord, open Thy door for us!) after which the lights in the church are turned on and simultaneously the curtain is opened. The clergy enter the altar with a hymn of rejoice, accompanied by the ringing of the bells, fanning of the marbaso & waving of the censer.
