Arianespace will launch an Ariane 6 rocket on a flight designated VA2XX, to put the MTG-I 2 meteorological satellite into geosynchronous transfer orbit. The Meteosat Third Generation Imager satellite will provide weather imagery over Europe for the European weather satellite agency, Eumetsat. Ariane 6 will fly in the Ariane 62 configuration, using 2 solid rocket boosters. - MTG-I 2 is the third satellite in the 3rd generation series of Meteosat. It is built on the SmallGEO (LUXOR) bus of OHB with Thales Alenia Space instruments and weighs about 3.76 tonnes. MTG (Meteosat Third Generation) is the follow-up system to the Meteosat MSG series of geostationary satellites. MTG will consist of a twin configuration of 3-axis-stabilised satellites: the Imaging mission satellite (MTG-I) and the Sounding mission satellite (MTG-S). The payload for MTG-I consists of the Flexible Combined Imager (FCI), Lightning Imager (LI), Data Collection System (DCS), and search and rescue (GEOSAR). The FCI is expected to outperform MSG Spinning and Enhanced Visible and Infrared Imager (SEVIRI) observations on cloud, aerosol, moisture and fire by adding new channels in the solar domain and by improving temporal-, spatial-, and radiometric resolution. For instance, the FCI in its High Resolution Fast Imagery mode focusing on Europe/North Africa with a resolution down to 500 meters and a repeat cycle of 2.5 minutes will produce the greatest benefits to Nowcasting services. The IRS will provide breakthrough measurements on the time evolution of horizontal and vertical water vapour and temperature structures. It is an unprecedented source of information on the dynamic and thermodynamic atmospheric fields, an important benefit to the Nowcasting and Numerical Weather Prediction services. It will also support forecasting pollution and monitoring of atmospheric minor constituents through its capability to provide estimates of diurnal variations of tropospheric contributions of atmospheric trace gases like ozone and carbon monoxide. The LI mission will deliver continuously and simultaneously measurements on total lightning over the full disk, improving the quality of information essential for Nowcasting services, for instance early warning of severe weather and air traffic routing and safety. The LI is therefore expected to contribute significantly to risk reduction measures. It will also contribute to the remote sensing of precipitation and support environmental applications related to the atmospheric chemical processes and to the climate system.
