March 31st is the anniversary of the Patriarchal election of His Holiness Patriarch Mor Ignatius Aphrem II. Following the demise of late Patriarch His Holiness Patriarch Moran Mor Ignatius Zakka Iwas I of blessed memory, a Holy Synod of the Universal Syriac Orthodox Church was convened to determine his successor. The synod was held at St. Jacob Baradeus Monastery in Atchaneh, Lebanon. It was presided by HB Mor Baselios Thomas I (Bavathirumeni) Catholicos & Mor Severius Jamil who was selected as Patriarchal Locum Tenens. On March 31st 2014, guided by the Holy Spirit the Holy Synod of the Syriac Orthodox Church elected Mor Cyril Aphrem Karim (then Metropolitan of the Archdiocese of the Syriac Orthodox Church for the Eastern United States) as the 122nd successor to St. Peter on the Holy See of Antioch and all the East.
