The Passover or Thursday of Mysteries and the Service of the Washing of the Feet (phesaho, hamsho d-rozé, Thekso d'S'hyogtho) according to the Liturgical Calendar of the Syriac Orthodox Church in Malankara. Today the Church commemorates the Last Supper or Passover meal Christ shared with his disciples. This event was the first Holy Qurbono instituted by our Lord. The Lord used leavened bread (lahmo) which is the bread of life. Today the Church has a 'Service of the Feet Washing or S'hyogtho' which recollects Christ washing the feet of His disciples, an act of humility that we must all observe in our lives. This service portrays Christ's washing of His disciples' feet after the Last Supper. It starts with the celebrant calling twelve deacons representing the disciples. A priest, or the highest ranking deacon, represents Simon Peter. It is worth noting that the Judas is excluded and replaced by Matthias, the disciple who was chosen to replace Judas after the resurrection of Christ (Acts 1:26). During the service, the celebrant washes the right feet of the 12 deacons, anointing them with oil and kissing them. Then the deacon (or priest) representing Peter, with the other eleven assisting him, washes both feet of the celebrant. If the celebrant is a bishop, he is carried on his chair when he reads the Gospels, amidst the ululation of women. (Courtesy SOR) The Syriac Christians of Kerala (St. Thomas Christians/Malankara Nasrani) have a tradition of preparing Passover Bread & Milk (pesaha appam & pesaha paal) in remembrance of the Passover event. On Thursday morning the home is cleaned, & the prayers of the day are recited. Following this, the special bread and milk (made from coconut paste) is prepared. The elder of the house will chant the following Qawmo & then break the bread to be shared from eldest to youngest in the family. 'Pesahaa-yaal pesahaadine nee - kkiya masiha Modi - ppiccharuluka krupa nin pesahaayaal' or 'Msheeho dab pesaho sroylé maru pesaho b-pesaho ab-sahalan wethraham`alayn.' or 'Christ Whose – Passion abolished – the Passover lamb.
