The Fifth Sunday of the middle cycle after Easter (had'bshabo hmis'hoyo d'mes'oye d'Qymtho) according to the Liturgical Calendar of the Syriac Orthodox Church. In St. Matthew's Gospel we read about Jesus feeding the 4000 with 7 loaves and few fish. This should not be confused with the previous two Sundays where He fed the 5000. Today's reading takes place around 6 months later during the late summer season. Here Christ is preaching at an area with a majority of non jews called Decapolis(a group of 10 small city states, one among the 10 being Gardarene). It was at this Gardarene that Christ cast out the Legion of demons in St. Mark chapter 5. The healed man wished to join the disciples, but Christ told him to preach the good news to his fellow countrymen instead. "And he departed, and began to publish in Decapolis how great things Jesus had done for him: and all men did marvel." (St. Mark 5:20). God has a plan for us that may be different than what we have in mind. The man who was healed by Christ wanted to join with the other disciples, but Christ gave him a different command. When Christ returned to Decapolis, the 4000+ who gathered to see Christ were the fruits of that man's efforts in spreading the Gospel, as commanded by the Lord.
