Staff and volunteers are working to restore native and culturally important plants, peoples' connection to place, and important ecosystem benefits–like erosion control, carbon sequestration, and resilience to climate change–to Puʻulani through multistory agroforestry. Research at Puʻulani seeks to understand how different metrics of restoration success change over the transition from non-native forest to culturally important agroforest and to inform best management practices. Today, the plants growing at Puʻulani feed people not onlyphysically but also spiritually and intellectually–through their use in lei, lāʻau lapaʻau (traditional Hawaiian medicine), and ceremony.
