July 12 is the commemoration of the dukhrono of St. John of Mardin according to the Liturgical Calendar of the Syriac Orthodox Church. Mor Yuhannon, born Joseph was a monk of the Edessan mountains. In 1125AD, he was elevated to bishop of Mardin & its Environs (Dara, Khabura, Kafrtut, & Talbsam). He was instrumental in renovating Dayro d-Mor Hananyo (St. Ananias Monastery/Kurkmo Dayro/Deyrulzafran/Saffron Monastery). In addition, he renovated & constructed 24 other monasteries & churches. He convened a council presided by Maphrian Mor Ignatius II, where he set 40 canons for the conduct of the monks, & another 41 more canons for monks in his diocese specifically. He composed a 36 page treatise on the mystery of the Holy Chrism along with other liturgical subjects. Mor Yuhannon was known for his architectural proficiency, the renovated monasteries & churches standing as testament. In 1165 he left for the Heavenly Abode. Patriarch Mor Mikhayel the Great composed a poem eulogizing him along with instituting a date in St. John's honor.
