Suffolk University's Ford Hall Forum, in collaboration with the Political Science & Legal Studies and Communication, Journalism & Media Departments present: Film Screening and Discussion of The Last Republican with a special appearance by former Congressman Adam Kinzinger, via zoom Tuesday, March 17, 5 PMSamia B1820 Somerset St. Boston MA 02108PDF Flyer The Last Republican chronicles the political and personal reckoning of former Congressman Adam Kinzinger as he breaks ranks with his party in the aftermath of January 6. Set against the turbulence of contemporary American politics, the film follows Kinzinger’s decision to speak out about threats to democratic norms — and the consequences that follow. Intimate and unsparing, The Last Republican explores conscience, party loyalty, political courage, and the cost of dissent within a polarized nation, offering a timely meditation on what it means to defend democratic principles when doing so comes at personal and political risk. Kinzinger was elected to the US House of Representatives in 2011 as a Republican. When Trump rallied his followers to besiege the US capital on January 6, 2021, Kinzinger was among ten Republicans who voted to impeach the president for instigating an insurrection. He then served on the Congressional committee to investigate what happened on January 6. This vital, surprisingly funny film offers a modern portrait of courage, showing that thoughtful, civil dialogue between people with opposing political views is possible. Filmed during Kinzinger’s final year in office, The Last Republican follows his decision to put country over career — publicly demanding accountability for Donald Trump’s role in the January 6 insurrection, at great personal and professional cost. The documentary delivers behind-the-scenes access to the January 6 committee hearings and explores what drove Kinzinger to take a stand and the lasting consequences of his choice. Following the screening, Kinzinger will be joined by cinematographer Joshua Salzman via zoom, and will be in conversation with Suffolk University professors Rachael Cobb and Shoshana Madmoni-Gerber.
