Where: CS2A, Computer Science building Speaker: Regan Shen Title: Become a High-Value Graduate in an AI-Driven Industry Abstract: This presentation will go through the timeline of artificial intelligence, from its early foundations to the systems shaping today’s industries. This historical perspective provides context for how intelligent systems have developed and how their role has expanded over time. Building on this foundation, real-world use cases from industry will be highlighted, ranging from traditional machine learning models to modern solutions that make use of agentic workflows. These examples illustrate how AI has supported decision-making, automation, and problem-solving across engineering and technical fields, and how its applications continue to evolve beyond today’s most visible technologies. As a recent graduate now working as a machine learning engineer, the focus then shifts to the reality facing students and new professionals entering the workforce. Rather than viewing AI as something that replaces human workers, the emphasis is on how using AI effectively can extend human capability, increase productivity, and create new opportunities. Drawing on everyday industry experience, practical insights are shared into how AI tools can be integrated into daily workflows and how graduates can position themselves to work confidently alongside intelligent systems. By linking the history of AI, its established role in industry, and the experience of a new professional in the field, this session delivers a clear message: those who learn to use AI effectively can set themselves as sought-after, high-value, and high-potential professionals in industry immediately after graduation. Biography: Regan Shen is a Machine Learning Engineer and Data Scientist with a BSc Honours in Computer Science (Cum Laude) from the University of Pretoria, where his research focused on metaheuristics, graph neural networks, and deep learning. Originally starting his career as a software engineer, he transitioned into machine learning, building and deploying production-ready AI systems that solve real-world problems — from AI agents and document intelligence systems to custom workflows for automation and data extraction. Currently at Isazi, Regan works on applied machine learning, computer vision, and AI solutions for industry, bridging traditional ML approaches with modern AI workflows and sharing practical insights on using AI effectively in the workforce.
