Black Sunday FDNY

Three veteran FDNY firefighters died in the LODD in Brooklyn, New York and the Bronx on Sunday January 23, 2005, a day that has become known as “Black Sunday” and called one of the saddest in fire department history. The six Bronx firefighters became trapped in the building while searching for people on the fourth floor. When the fire from the third floor broke through to the fourth, they were faced with a horrifying choice. They jumped out a fourth-floor window, knowing that they would be critically injured. Two firefighters were killed and four others were badly hurt when they were forced to jump from a fourth-floor window of a burning building in the Bronx. Later that day another FDNY Firefighter was killed in a two –alarm basement fire in Brooklyn. A couple of major issues were highlighted in the fire in the Bronx. IN 2000 FDNY stopped issuing bailout ropes so the firefighters. Between all 6 FF’s only one had rope. Since then FDNY has begun issung ropes again. This fire also highlighted the problem of illegally subdivided apartments. This apartment was illegally subdivided and as a result not all areas had access to the fire escape. https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/fire/reports/face200503.html https://www.firefighterclosecalls.com/fdny-january-23-remembering-black-sunday-reports-videos-audio-hands-on-training-info/
